EXPLORERS GLACIER

Glaciers: masses of ice in motion

Glaciers are large ice masses formed by the accumulation, compaction and recrystallization of snow over time. They originate in areas where the accumulated snowfall exceeds the annual melt. They comprise the accumulation zone, where ice forms, and the ablation zone, where it melts or detaches. Glaciers move slowly due to gravity and pressure, creating spectacular landscapes and modeling the terrestrial relief.

How are glaciers formed?

Glaciers are formed when snow falls continuously throughout the year and temperatures are mild. Thus, at the onset of the cold season, a new layer is generated on top of the one already formed in the previous year, which is compacted. The compression, thanks to the compaction of the new snowflakes that fall on the previous layers, creates a process of crystallization of the ice by releasing the air between the different layers. In this way the snow increases its density, resulting in a sliding of the ice, which flows faster and more freely. The process of glacier formation can take more than 100 years.

It is an excursion that starts at Puerto Rio Tranquilo to bahia mansa.

The Explorers Glacier is one of the most impressive places in Patagonia. With its more than 4 km. long, this glacier will surprise you with its majesty and natural beauty.
